Biography

Dr. Robert L. Emerson received both his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Kansas and has over 20 years of pharmacy practice experience in both community and ambulatory care practice settings. Dr. Emerson began his academic career with KU as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Coordinator of the Pharmacy Skills Laboratory. In this capacity, Dr. Emerson taught various aspects of the Skills Lab curriculum including Fundamentals of Dispensing, Extemporaneous Compounding, Patient Counseling and a variety of Disease State Management Labs.

In 1997, Dr. Emerson was appointed Director of the school’s Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Program. He worked closely with off campus adjunct clinical faculty preceptors and was responsible for the development of a network of early experiential education opportunities for students, in both community and institutional practice settings, across the state of Kansas. Dr. Emerson currently serves as Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Wichita Affairs. He is responsible for the development and day-to-day administrative oversight of the KU School of Pharmacy Wichita Campus which will open in the fall 2011. Dr. Emerson has an academic interest in the area of rural health and works collaboratively with the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita to facilitate research interests in this area. He also has an interest in the area of Chemical Dependency and Substance Abuse and has served as co-instructor of a pharmacy practice elective course on this topic.

Dr. Emerson serves on numerous school committees. He served as faculty advisor to the KU Chapter of the American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) from 2000 to 2010 where he provided leadership in the development and implementation of numerous academy patient care initiatives including Operation Immunization: Greensburg and Operation Immunization: Wichita among others. He also served as Director of the Multicultural Pharmacy Scholars Program from 2004 to 2010.
